NFS slow with big dir

I've performance issue with very large directory mounted via nfs on linux client.
with a 4000 files dir, it takes about 1 minute.
transfer rate is quite fine.
nfs mount options are defaults.

Dear ptorric,

Can he test the large directories with FTP or SAMB?
What release you are using? Does the performance look normal with smaller directories?
