Hi,
We have been using E-NAS for alomost 4 years now, initially we had a lot of problems because of the Domain Server being NT, but once we upgraded the firmware we had a smooth run.
Off late the NAS box has been behaving strangely, it went out of the domain several times, the domain is still NT, each time we restarted the NAS box and it worked ok, yesterday evening it went off and we can't join it back to the domain, we tried all the methods, repeatedly, its more than 12 hours now that we have been trying.
Somebody please advice on what to do now. We removed the NAS from Server Manager, restarted the NT server, restarted NAS, added it back to the domain, again restarted the NAS, but still it says can't find Domain controller. we can ping, we get the web UI etc...
waiting for responses....
Ananth
Ok - Here we go - Let's get you up and going. I need you to fill in the blanks.
Is DNS ok - for the Domain and the NAS Server - ping by name on both?
Was there a change in the Domain Server - add or check to see if there is a reverse address record for the NAS Server
Try changing to PDC then back to ADS or unless this a PDC
Re-set the Domain password on the Windows server - go to the users names and find the admin name right click then change password - then enter the password again into the NAS Server.
Please check all time zones and time setting.

Thanks for the Quick reply Todd.
Its Windows NT Server, there is no DNS Server in that Domain.
How do I reverse check?
We did try changing to ADS and back to PDC but no hope..
We'll reset the Domain password and let you know in 10 mins.
It was working fine there was no apparent major setting changes, so can't figure out why the problem came up.
Anyway a million thanks for suggesting all these....
Send the logs to support@open-e.com and I will take a look at them. Is your DNS server on the Windows system?

Your help is much appreciated....

If I am up and doing nothing then I would rather help an engineer get off the technical island.
Trust me I know what it is all about I was there many years ago. We are always here to help.

Dear Todd,
I had send a mail to you and attached our log file. Hope you have recieved it. The storage is working fine now, hope it stays up like that.
Any ideas on what could have caused this sudden break down?
Again a big Thank you from all ouf our Technical Team here :)

Ananth.
One of the support engineers will be reviewing this. Thanks for the reply.

Hi Todd,
We still have the earlier said problem, but the last time it happened was when the NAS box got completely full! now we are monitoring it closely.
Another issue, we are migrating to windows 2003 server and Active Directory in a couple of weeks time, can you please guide us through the process. When the earlier said issue occured we had tried to join the NAS box to another windows 2003 based network, but got a lot of errors, so we would like to have a complete step by step procdure before starting on it.
regards
Ananth.
This procedure is the same, when changing from your PDC environment select ADS with all ADS server information Password and Username. Please make sure DNS, Server Time on both systems are set properly. Also remember ADS uses Kerberos (Please review Microsoft Kerberos documentation) please check all Kerberos in your Windows server and review any ticket or life of tickets, this is located in the GPO of your Windows server (please review your Windows documentation). Also add the NAS computer in you ADS and make sure all your users are trusted. If you are still experiencing any issues please send logs to support@open-e.com

Dear Todd,
I'll get back on the joining to ADS Domain..
presently we are getting this message when we try to access the storage management web interface.
Index of /
Name Last modified Size Description
Apache/1.3.26 Ben-SSL/1.48 Server at ancom Port 443
We usually get it back if we restart the system, but is there any way to permanently solve this issue?
regards
Ananth
Can you test with FireFox and let me know if this still comes up with the same message.

We get the same error in both the browsers. In fact Firefox is our default browser!

Can you send a screen shot and logs to support@open-e.com to review this. Did this just happen recently? After sending logs try to clear them to see if this happens again.

I've send the screen shot by mail, this happened recently, we had it before I think, not sure, we access the Nas web interface from several systems is that the problem?
Yes I have seen the screen shot. Lets wait until you can reboot the server to see what is happening any chance that you may have change or not installed the SSL Certificate for your browser "SSLCert.crt", not sure if there is some firewall blocking or causing any issues. I don't think that this is the issue as you where able to get in before but if you can verify that this is not the case. Thanks!

Hope you got the log files, I had send the mail yesterday.
Yes we did get them. But the errors are from many months ago and are not related to the ADS or 443 web gui (none showed for these issues). Please clear the logs.

dear Todd,
Yesterday we changed the position of our storage in the rack, it was at the top, it was moved to the bottom to accomodate a new server, the storage is now not joining to the domain. we did all what we regulalry do when the storage behaves like this.
We removed all the logs, we removed the storage from the Domain and tried to add it back, it shows up in Server Manager, and we can see the shares from properties, but when we try to access it over the network it asks for user name and password! We even changed the administrator passwords.
now it is set to internal LDAP. Kindly advice on what to do? we have reduced the load on the storage box and only non critical data is stored there. Please advice on what to do.
regards
Ananth.
Were there any changes to the ADS or Kerberos? Check the following:
Was there an IP Address change on the NAS Server?
Try deleting the computer name in your Windows server then re-enter the NAS server computer name again w/password - Then enter the Domain / administrator & password in the NAS server again.
Check your DNS setting Forward and Reverse for the NAS server.
Check any changes to WINS servers.
If you are using any Kerberos please provide the errors from the Windows server "Event ID errors".
Try going to PDC if this connects then go to ADS authentication.

Hi Tom,
Hope you remember our Open E-NAS issue, recently our NAS box got completely filled up and promptly it went out of the network. It wasn't in the network in the first place, we couldn't add it, that was where we left off last time, it was configured to be in a work group with the same domain name, so it got listed in our Network Places.
Anyway it not not listed there, users connect to it using IP address. We cleared the logs, changed the administrator password, tried to join it to the PDC, removed from Server manager, tried all other routine steps but no hope.
The NAS box is now configured as Internal LDAP, with one user account for all folders, without any security. We were using it as PDC, and taking user account from the Windows NT server, with security enabled for different departments.
any help is much appreciated.
regards
Ananth.
Try re-flashing the DOM with CD-ROM. Make sure you have the exact ISO file size. Please save your settings. Are there any Event ID errors from the Microsoft side. If this does not work send logs to support@open-e.com
Then make sure to leave in LDAP mode and try the following:
Removed from NAS server name from the Windows, Server manager
Then make sure to synchronize clocks on all and have proper NTP server for this (I think you may have checked this just checking).
Then try again with PDC and disable trusted domains for tests.
If that fails send logs to support@open-e.com

Try re-flashing the DOM with CD-ROM. Please explain how this is done? We didn't get you...
There are no event ID's in the NT Server, when we add "Storage" to the domain from Server Manager, its joins, and when we try to add from Web interface of Nas box also it gets listed in the Server Manager, but we also get a message to try again as it can't find the Domain Controller.
We had this problem in the inital days of purchase, but when we updated the firmware it workied fine for 2 to 3 years...with occasional HDD failures only....
Please remember about correct file size please verify and compare from download. Link below to access ISO for NAS Enterprise.

Update Instructions:
NOTE: this update will reset all settings to factory defaults.
Before Updating, all existing snapshots must be removed. You might have trouble to access your volumes after updating when you leave old snapshots on the server.
To be sure, that no snapshot is active, please deactivate synchronization as well.
Please write down the actual NAS server IP address and NAS server name. After having updated Open-E NAS, please re-enter both.
Please write down authorization settings.
Before Updating, please save “User”, “Groups”, “Shares” and “Assignments” under Menu: “Maintenance” “Resources Misc.” “Save resources”.
Please download and save NAS Server Logs:
Menu “Status” “Hardware” in Function Logs click on “Download”, then save on your local HDD.
The ISO-Files which include in update file must be burned on a CD with your favorite Burning software. (For example: Nero Burning ROM - option: “Burn Image”, etc.)
In order to re-flash the module, please install CD-ROM as Secondary-Master and DOM (disk-on-module) as Primary-Master. USB CD-ROM can be used as well.
Please set the BIOS to boot from CD-ROM drive. Then boot from the ISO-CD and wait until prompt: “Update complete, Please Remove CD and restart”
After re-fleshing, please reset the BIOS to boot from Primary-master HDD.
Updating the system may take about 10 minutes.
