Default USB won't boot? (Can't find linux)

Is this a known problem? I'm running on a 2GB stick and have tried all emulation modes (USB-FDD,USB-HDD,USB-ZIP,USB-CDROM) and multiple machines. All come up to the boot prompt, but can't find the linux kernel.
    TIA,
    Bryan

Found an "ancient" 512MB drive. Worked like a charm. Odd bit that.

    G'day Bryan,
Just out of curiosity was the 2GB formatted as FAT/FAT32?
    Ben.
