    Default Dumb question from a newbie :)

    As my NAS-hardware doesn't have a HW-RAID controller (HW is a Thecus N16000) I have,
    as far as I understand, two options:

    - create a SW-RAID and then LVs on this SW-RAID
    - directly create LVs with the existing disks

    First question: is that true?

    And if it is... second question:
    what are the advantages / disadvantages of these two options?

    Main advantages of using any RAID is redundancy and performance boost. Depending on configuration you will use you will be able to secure your volume group from failure of one or more disks or/and combine speed and space of devices. For more general information please see:

    all right, that question was really dumb LV didn't have any RAID-functionality.... should have had a coffee before posting
