Do DSS-32TB support 1.5TB x 24 HDD

Dear ALL

I am configuring a DSS-32TB solution which is using 1.5TB SATA HDD x 24 with two 3Ware RAID Adapters(Each 3Ware control 1.5TB SATA x 12).
But the 1.5TB x 24 is 36TB, can DSS-32TB detected it? or I have to use DSS-64TB license?

Hi Andy

If you already have a 32T license, add a 4TB upgrade to reach 36TB.
Otherwise you will receive message that you are over the licensed capacity limit.

Do You mean that I can upgrade my DSS license from 4TB to 8TB, 12TB by adding 4TB license step by step?

Yes
Our upgrade licenses come in 4T, 8T, 16T, 32T and 64T.
You can mix and match them to achieve the storage capacity that you need.
If you want to grow your storage in increments of 4T that will work as well.

BTY, If I have 4TB license already, then I want to upgrade to 32TB. What is the best way to upgrade to 32TB?
a> 4+ 32 = 36
b> 4 + 4 + 8 + 16 = 32
c> 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 16 = 32
d> 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 = 32
or the others?

Option A would be less expensive as this would be a bulk price or in future purchases buy DSS 16TB then add the 16TB Lic. but only in the beginning.

Hi Andy,

Chances are that your 1.5TB disks onlly have about 1.36TB or so of actual space.

You know harddisk manufacturers cheat in their numbering, so you never get the actual space that you pay for. I have Seagates 1.5 TB disks in my workstation, and they are 1.36TB under Windows XP.

1.36 x 24 = 32.64 TB just above the 32TB unfortunately.

And what about hardware RAID? If I use 24 x 1.36 TB in RAID-6, I have only 22 x 1.36 TB capacity for use. Then I'm below 32 TB - is this possible? Or is open-e license always for brutto size?

Correct.

For HDDs 1.5TB disks have 1,500,000,000,000 Bytes

For all other computers components 1.5TB is (correctly) 1,649,267,441,664 Bytes

The difference is 9.1%.

We only account for the "Usable capacity" not the "Raw capacity".
