Problem setting up replication source volume

Hi all,

I am new to Open-E and at the moment I am running Open-E iSCSI-R3 from a demo CD. I wanted to setup volume replication, but I cannot set my volumes to be either source od destination volumes.

The volume sizes are 4000GB each and the replication mark is checked, but as soon as I try to set one volume to be the source volume I am presented this error message:

Data on lv0000 are inconsistent.
If you really want change to Source, please clear MetaData first.

I have tried to clear the mata data, but that didn't seem to do anything, since the next time I am trying to set the volume to source, the same error appears again.

So, it seems that Open-E has problems setting up volume replication with volume that big, although I have read that 4 TB volumes are supported.

But maybe it's just, that I only have 3 GB of RAM in my box.

Can anybody tell me, why I can't delete the lv after having it set to source or destination? The red X is not active. The lv is not mapped to a target.

Hi Budy

Do you have the correct volumes checked for the source and destination.
Clear metadata as well
CONFIGURATION -> volume manager -> Vol. replication -> Volume replication mode.

Could you also try with a smaller volume size

Increase Vmalloc
From the console CRTL-ALT-W -> Tuning Options -> Vmalloc

As for deleting Logical Volumes:
Delete any replication task that are using the LV's that you want to delete
In the action pull down menu select expand LVXXXX
CONFIGURATION -> volume manager -> vg[nr] -> Function: Volume manager.
then uncheck "Use Volume Replication"
Ckick Apply
This should turn the X to red
click on the red X to delete the LV

thanks for you reply. I did check a smaller volume size of 2 TB and that made replication work. Also I have read about adjusting some memory settings and I will try your suggestion tomorrow. Unfortuanetly, the remote access to the console seems to be kinda useless on Macs, since I can't seem to figure out the correct terminal settings, thus I can't login but can't issue any command except F1. ;)

As am running with a 2 TB volume, I will try to remove it and create a new one the way you suggested.

Are there any number on the impact replication will have if there're equal setups on either end? Right now, my replication server is considerably slower than the source server and that seems to have a huge impact on overall performance.

Hi To-L,

unfortuanetly, I cannot try this with the demo cd, since changeing the vmalloc size requires a reboot.

So I will have no chance to check this out, bummer! :(
