How to remove a Unit from a volume group

Hi,

is there a possibility to remove a Unit from a volume group? I seem to cannot find it in the GUI. Since the volume groups are based on LVM that should be possible, shouldn't it?

I accidentially assigned the wrong unit to a vg and now I need to remove it again.

The only way to remove the Volume Group is from the Extended tools from Console. From the console enter CTRL + ALT + X then select "Delete content of units" select the proper Volume Group to delete it then the system will reboot.

This is in the Manual as well on page 39.

But, how can I know if there's data on the unit at all? This is what I have done:

- I have a 6.5 TB unit that already hosts a 3.2 TB LV
- then I added a 250GB unit to vg0
- added a snapshot volume of 250GB
- added a snapshot volume of 150GB

Then I realized that I added the wrong unit to vg0. How likely is it, that there's already data on it?

Actually from the latest release it is on page 40 of the manual.

From the previous post I was assuming that you created a Volume Group but then wanted to delete it. If there is data in the Volume Group then you should see from within the Volume Group the Logical Volumes that you have created within.

Let's say that you have 2 VG's.

VG00
Existing w/ data and has 3.2TB LV

VG01

Then added new LV's or Snapshots

or

VG00 w/ data and has 3.2TB LV
then added another 250GB to the VG00 to increase the size.
If this is the case then you cannot remove it the 250GB from the VG00. You will have to backup you data and delete the whole VG00.

I see. Isn't this a bit odd? Open-E surely uses LVM and LVM does provide the ability to move data from PVs to other extents to be able to remove PVs from the VGs.

Otherwise its like it is now: now, I will have to remove my VG00 altogehter. This is not a real problem for now, since this is my replication target, but I do find this a bit cumbersome. Especially if this happens to you when you have bigger volumes and thus enormous backup/restore times.

When joining the Units together (we span the units) and if data is being written to the Unit it would be very hard to extract with the file system that we use and somehow in our LVM move any data from that unit to the original unit. So currently we do not have this feature available and most likely won't any time soon, this function has been like this from early days of our products.

Alright - just an important thing to have in mind. ;)

I am using DSS 6

I had a volume V01 which had 1 unit assigned to it LV00

This was formatted as a NFS drive.

By accident I assigned LV01 to V01 but have not assigned the space etc

I used the "Delect Contents of Units" and removed LV01 from V01.. But when DSS restarted there was NO V01 any more.

How can recreate V01 with LV00 without loosing all of the data there.
