I have searched this forum but could not find an answer. So sorry if I may ask a stupid question.
How is the storage limit of 2GB for DSS Lite calulated - gross or net? I would like to use a bunch of 8 500GB SATA disk in RAID 10 with net 2GB storage. Is this possible or prohibited?

No problem, first keep in mind that the Lite version only uses the SW RAID as it does not have RAID controller support so all disks will be counted for a total of 2TB but you can purchase more storage license keys from link below so a another 2TB will only cost $105.00.
In your case we dont have RAID 10 support with the Lite version for our SW RAID tools only 0, 1, 5, and 6.
