Add interface to bond

I was doing some maintenance on my DSSv7 server which required reconfiguring the bonded network connections. I was able to drop some of the interfaces from the bonds. Now I want to add them to other existing bonds without downtime. Is it really true that you can only remove interfaces from bonded connections and not add them without removing the bonded interface itself and recreating it? I was certainly hoping to avoid downtime during this operation. Hopefully I have just overlooked some procedure in the manual and on the forums.
