Is it possible to "upgrade" from NAS to iSCSI without losing any data
on the existing volume?

Yes you can upgrade without losing your data and your volumes. If you have NAS-R3 Enterprise version and want iSCSI features you would need to purchase the License Key to upgrade your NAS-R3 to DSS.
When doing this please make sure that you are on the latest version of NAS-R3 Enterprise (5_0_up46_build_3088) and save your settings in Maintenance > Miscellaneous and select all options for Setup and Configuration as well as save locally.

Are you upgrading a NAS Logical Volume to a iSCSI Logical Volume, if so this is not possible to convert these Logical Volumes other than to recreate them. From the post I thought you were asking if you can upgrade a NAS-R3 or iSCSI-R3 product to DSS without losing the data.

Yes , please make backup first. If you have another system you can use the Demo-CD to replicate data by using the Data Replication feature so you will have another copy.

Dynamic Disk for Backup
Hello -
I know a bit of German and would like to attempt to answer your question.
Am to understand you are looking for a procedure for backing up to a Dynamic Disk?
If so, here is a procedure I am using which may help you.
Configure a snapshot to a local volume you wish to back up.
go to Configuration -> Volume Manager -> Create Snapshot
Then, attach the disk to the system and go to
Configuration -> Volume Manager
click on the 'Rescan' button, add the disk as a Dynamic Disk (dynamic00)
In Configuration -> NAS Settings, go to Local Backup Settings (bottom of screen)
Check box 'Use local backup'; click Apply
In Maintenance -> Backup -> Backup devices
Create new virtual device; check option 'Use Devices: Dynamic Volume'
In Maintenance -> Backup -> Backup pool: Create Backup pools
In Maintenance -> Backup -> Backup devices:
Go to 'Your created virtual devices' and function: 'Create new tape'
label your tape
In Maintenance -> Backup -> Backup tasks: Create a new backup task
Click on the 'Play' button to start 'back00', then
in status task, you will see the task as 'running'
If you swap a disk, you will need to use 'back01'
After swapping, go to
Configuration -> Volume Manager -> Vol Group
click 'Rescan' to recognize the new drive
A separate backup task is required for each disk drive

But i get always, after the start of the backup en error "2008-08-04 22:21:55 start failed"
I have to say that my Unit is 4656.56GB big with 1 GB of snap and 3 GB of swap.
I think this is my problem, but i cannot make snapshots bigger...

Thats really weird ...
I did a dynamic back up and it works smooth...
Your data is big!!! How many drives/tapes you are using? And definetly you need more than a 1G snapshot for 4.6TB data.
You dont have any space left??? Can you expand your volume group then expand your snapshot?
