I can use the USB stick to boot open-e V6. but when i use it to install open-e , I got the error:

Yes, I have read the manual. And I have use the same USB to install open-e DSS V6 on other servers without any problem.
Maybe I have to use the ISO file to make a CD...
Thank you too ekoh, well yes I think you may have a problem with the space at your flash memory ,it may doesn’t have enough space .
Also be sure that you are choosing the 64bit version because you have a Xeon CPU( 64-bit architecture processor ;)

I have use a 4GB USB-Stick. And before use it , I have format it with FAT32.
When I boot my server from this USB-Stick, I can run TRIAL 64bit version and no problem. But, when I tyied to run INSTALLER. I got the error. And the server became freeze. :-(
then give it a try with the CD , to see if the problem still happend or not.
I've had exactly the same problem trying to install DSS v6 Lite on my supermicro MB based storage server. I've tried using the USB stick method as well as the CD method. I've tried installing to USB media as well as a local SATA hard drive. It just gives me the "No such file or directory" error and sits at a # prompt. I have to power cycle to get out.
Anyone from Open-E have any ideas?

This looks like some installation issue, there is a video that might help in situations like this where you are having issues to get DSS V6 booting.

I've watched the suggested video and I'm still having trouble deciphering this error. I must have a clear and concise answer on what may be causing it.
Everything described above by other members matches my experience. The system locks on this error and I'm forced to power cycle the server. I've tried installation via both CD and USB.Code:egrep: /proc/bus/usb/devices: No such file or directory#
With both types of media I'm able to run Open-e in 64-bit "read only" mode. It's only when I attempt to install the software locally that I run into this error. Any assistance from an Open-e engineer would be greatly appreciated.
this is a very simple process.....
explain where you cant make it work:
1- format usb stick on windows PC to FAT16, quick format is fine.
2- unpak downloaded DSSV6 .zip file to usb drive.
3- run /boot/bootinst.exe to make bootable
4- boot dss appliance from usb drive.
5- enjoy
When you say locally do you mean on a USB flash stick or 2GB RAID volume that is assigned as the first boot order. If you are able to boot fully without an issue via the CDROM or USB then it now lays in the device. What type device? Watch the video as there are some other tips that might help you.

Thanks for your reply. If I read your response correctly, you're suggesting I can run Open-e off a USB drive in a prodiction enviormnment? I never really considered it, but assuming it will save all the configs, I suppose it should work just fine. My initial trial was based off a read only boot from an ISO burned to CD.
I was previously attemting to install Open-e on a 2GB RAID, but kept running into this blasted egrep error.
Device Type: Intel Mainboard S3420GPX
to boot from the 2gb raid unit, it must not be part of the array you intend to use in dss for logical volumes. bootable LUN.
it must also be made bootable using the raid controller, and set to be first boot device.
then when asked to install, from cd, choose this partition to install to. usually sda(1), or sdb(1).

If you have carved out a 2GB LUN on your storage array, this is wrong.Quote:

The HDs in the array should not be made bootable, and not carved into partitions.
The bootable media needs to be seperate from the array.

you created 2G RAID 5 (VD_0)
i have the same raid configuration program difference only one - i created RAID 10
with my "promise" raid i didn't have any problem with installing DSS v6
all is working perfectly.
