ERROR: No system volume found! System services can't work without system volume !

Hi everyone, and thx for those who will be able to help

Last week i had some troubles with my NAS. It looked like some troubles with the RAID, so i changed the RAID controller, and i also had 2 degraded disk on my RAID6 volume, that i changed.

I started to rebuild them, but couldnt pass 51% cause of ECC-errors on a 3rd disk, so i added the option to ignore those errors.

Then the rebuild worked.

Now when im booting, i'm getting this error :
ERROR: No system volume found! System services can't work without system volume !

Run a consistency check on the raid array and see if the previous errors can be repaired.

let's see if it will help, but i have doubts, because after the rebuild, there was an automatic verify, and it found nothing wrong.

There is a good chance you will need to restore from backups. Wait and see if there are more repairs. The system volume can be rebuilt if needed.

If this volume doesnt come back, i dont know what to do...

and concretely, at the end of this test, what should i do ? just reboot my NAS and it should work ? or some others commands to run ?

I arrived this morning at work, verify completed, without errors, but no difference, still the same error...

System volume is a small partition used for storing configuration of most services. If it is corrupted due to hardware problem you will not be able to access the data, even if it is on completely different device.
Each volume group has its own system volume, so in case one is corrupted you can switch to the other one (if you dont have backup of configuration just create new share/iscsi target with exiting volume to access the data).
What you should do now is to reinstall the os to make sure boot medium is ok, or boot it from flash drive and switch default volume group to other one to use other system volume.

I bought this NAS with the system pre-installed. So i didnt receive any media to reinstall.
I can boot the OS, still, but when i try to access my shares to manage them, it says that there is not system volume.
I'm only having one volume group.
right now, im running the "unit verifying" thru the 3ware bios. I don't know if it's the same at the verify thru CLI, but it looks like. It's taking exactly the same time so far... (27% so far).
i should be done in 5h.
so, then i can just reboot, go on the webinterface.
If i go to configuration -> volume managers , i should see the VG0
but i cant create a new share through configuration->NAS ressources->shares cause it's telling me there that i have no SV or something like that. So how should i create a new share ?
by the way, if i create a new share, there is no risks that it creates a new SV that will erase my old shares ?
my support has run out of date, so i doubt they will help me.

if you dont have other VG create one on single HDD drive until you recover. Create new share, backup the data, then recreate the VG if you dont want support help.
I bet you can renew your support licence.

ok, so to sum it up :
i added a new empty drive in the slot 23 of my NAS
so i have in slots 0 to 11, 12 disks, making one RAID6 unit where there is my VG0)
now, i will reboot my NAS, open the web interface, and try to create a new VG on that disk in the slot23. Let's say VG1.
then i can create a new share, on this VG1.
how to backup the data from my VG0 to my VG1 ?

i could renew my support licence, but im closer to buy a new equipement, cause this one is getting a bit old. So i'd like to get my datas back and start to choose my future solution

share is just a mountpoint to your real data, so you create new share pointing to existing logical volume on your old volume group
you backup your data by copying it from share to your local PC

I bet you didn't create new volume group yet, that's why you can't choose it as default one.
Or if you did and the other one is missing then it may be corrupted for good.

If you don't know what you are doing and you have very important data then its really better to handle it over to support people over remote session

in the web interface, that works perfectly, i cant access my shares, cause in the window "Configuration -> Nas ressources -> shares" i get this message "No system volume found."

I wonder tho, why is the OS working, if the system can't read my shares ? aren't they on the same disk ?

How to create a new share on this new disk, and what to do then ?
I'm sorry i seem kinda lost, cause i'm in a stress to make something wrong, that would lose my datas for good. If someone could give me a step by step explanation, would be awesome !

I wrote step by step two times already, but here it is again (please read carefully)

- in console tool select new volume group as default
- create share to point to your old data
- enable one of suitable protocols for it etc. etc.

I did those 2 steps. My new disk wasnt appearing, cause it wasnt set as a unit, in the RAID bios.

now, how to create this share and to make it point to my old datas ? is it in CLI ? in web interface ? which menu ? cause i can't find

i don't know if you are talking about creating a share through configuration->NAS Ressources->Shares
But i did try to create a shared folder there, and got this error : bind_share:Error mounting share "test"

Use the "Specify path" and look for the share in logical volumes you have then click once on the share then make sure you enter the share name and click apply.

And when you click on the Double dots you dont see your other LV000x? What happens if you go to the one that you do see and keep digging into it do you see it? If not you may have had a hardware issue and if so it might be a good idea to send in the logs to support.

If you dont see your other logical volumes from the raid, I would say your raid repair was unsuccessful.
Does the other volume group show up in the webGUI, and do you see logical volumes created from it?

Ok, so i kept digging.
it seems that my new VG (vg01) didnt have a LV created, so i could create one.
now i have the LV0100 attached to vg01 (my new disk alone)
and LV0000 my old LV attached to vg00(my old RAID6 disks, + the 2 news)

on this LV0000 i created a "test" share, but i dont see any of my old shares.

if in the CLI, i set the vg00 as default, each time i boot, i get the message "ERROR: No system volume found! System services can't work without system volume !"

in the WEBinterface, when i want to access my share :i have aswell : "Warning No system volume found."

there is an option in the CLI that i didnt try "restore LVM VG (volume group) configuration"
do you think it might help ?

This maybe more complicated from the RAID array, you may need to contact the RAID vendor and provide them logs and explain the sequence of what happened.
