    Unhappy FTP service: Status Failed

    Hi,

    we try to get ftp-access to the NAS-server; unfortunately without success.

    No matter what has been setup under NAS-Settings and NAS-resources, Status/system always shows:
    Service: FTP
    State: ON
    Status: FAILED

    In the error.log file we found the following message:
    /var/run/proftpd/proftpd.scoreboard: No such file or directory
    (Perhaps you need to specify the ScoreboardFile with -f, or change the compile-time default directory?)

    Under Configuration/NAS-Settings: Use FTP is enabled and we have tried with several basic settings:
    FTP port: 21
    Max clients: 200
    Max clients: 5
    Encryption settings:
    None or SSL
    Shares which work fine with other protocols have been allowed for FTP access with "Anonymous mode" or "Users with password"

    Model: Data Storage Server
    Version: 5.0.DB49000000.3278
    Release date: 2008-11-19

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Andreas

    What is the FTP program that you are using, below is the software which has been tested:

    * CoreFTP (Windows)
    * FileZilla (Windows)
    * IgloFTP (Windows and Linux)
    * SSLFTP (Linux console client)

    Note
    If the NAS server uses Windows domain authorization the short domain name along with a plus sign must precede the username, e.g. DOMAIN+Administrator.

    To connect to a share via the Users with password mode, switch the encryption type in your SFTP client to SSL or TLS. All Users with password shares are in the shares folder. Users see only the authorized shares.

    Note
    If you are unable to see any directories when connected to the FTP server please make sure that you have the rights to access any shares over FTP. If you still cannot see any directories please switch your FTP client to passive mode.

    Note
    Most FTP clients have bookmarks which allow for setting up IP, a port home folder, etc. Suggested home folder for the Anonymous mode users is pub while for the Password mode users it is shares.
    All the best,

    Todd,

    thank you for the information.
    The FTP program we were using is called SmartFTP (latest version). But we had also tried with some common comand line ftp clients. Upon your recommendation we have downloaded and installed CoreFTP (Windows); and as well we followed your connection guidelines. But there is no different behaviour: after the timeout of 60 sec. the client says "Can't establish connection".
    Anyway, we have some doubts that this problem might have anything to do with the ftp clients. What might be the reason that after a fresh reboot (without having a client tried to connect) the DSS is already showing in Status/system: Status: FAILED for the Service: FTP (State: ON)?

    That does sound strange that this message is appearing. Try turning off the FTP services from the NAS Resources and the NAS Settings. Then turn back on again to see if the status states failed again.

    Was there a support ticket that you submitted on this issue?
    All the best,

    When disabling FTP under Configuration/NAS-Settings the result is:
    Status/system shows for the Service: FTP State: OFF Status: INACTIVE
    After enabling FTP again under Configuration/NAS-Settings the result is:
    Status/system shows for the Service: FTP State: ON Status: FAILED
    Same behaviour when rebooting the system after disabling FTP.
    After continuing testing we have found out:
    When disabling FTP on ALL shares the FTP-service could be started and the result is:
    Status/system shows for the Service: FTP State: ON Status: ACTIVE
    Enabling FTP on one or more share in "Anonymous mode" results in:
    Status/system shows for the Service: FTP State: ON Status: ACTIVE
    The moment FTP is enabled on one or more share(s) with "Users with password" the result is:
    Status/system shows for the Service: FTP State: ON Status: FAILED

    It seems that FTP works in "Anonymous mode" but not with "Users with password".
    Allowing FTP access in "Anonymous mode" is not an option for us.

    All shares can be accessed all times through SMB with the option "Users with password" enabled without problems.

    No, so far we didn't opened a support ticket on this issue.

    Thanks,

    Andreas

    Dear Andreas,

    I Enabled/disabled the FTP connection but I didn't get the "failed" massage. Please download the logs (Status->Hardware) and send it to support@open-e.com with you notes.

    Regards,
    SJ
