Hi,

Spec'ing a new box for Open-E. Have 24 hot swap drives and trying to decide if its better to do:
1) 1 huge Raid 6 Array and hot spares
2) 4 raid 10 arrays and hot spares

I keep thinking a huge array is going to have performance issues once you start connecting more then a few clients, but it would be nice to carve out a chunk of disk space as needed out of a huge array.

A smaller set of raid 10 arrays requires more deliberate planning and worries of running out of disk space, but the performance would probably be better. I could allocate targets as needed depending on how busy a raid 10 set is, but again, more hands on.

Was wondering what others do when contemplating settin up a SAN box. Also curious what hardware you decided it. I was looking at 3ware or an Areca controller and using sas 15k drives.

Thanks!
