I am also following this issue, but I did need a storage server, so I turned to another solution. Yet as soon as this issue is resolved, I will reinstall my DSS Lite server and try again.
Same issue here.
Installed Data Storage Software V6 Lite vesrion 6.0up04.8401.3530 32bit from a USB Cd in a DL380G3 and got the 'Could not create preactivation file. Please contact support.' during the offline activation.
Opened a support ticket. Got answer that lite version has limited support.
How do you think I test this product if I cannot evaluate it?
I am a reseller, what about NFR keys also?

Last week I bought a DSS V6 Full 8TB and a DSS V6 Lite 6TB.
To install the full version on my actual NAS, I decided to install the Lite version on an old hardware to backup my main NAS before I install DSS there.
Everything works fine until the Activation of the DSS V6 Lite.
I get the same problems as Jurgen_VDP in post #1.
online activation -> "Cannot open XML data file: /currver/activation.xml"
offline activation -> "Could not create preactivation file. Please contact support."
I hope someone could help me to get this working.
