For easier maintenance. I can simply backup the whole thing or replicate it from hypervisor's prespective.....

I'm targetting XenServer 5.5, just in case

My gold is to have VM installed on a Shared Storage (For HA and stuff) without having to buy a SAN (just 2 ou 3 physical machine).

I'm also wondering if we can make an active/active/passive setup with 3 physical machine like scalecomputing does !

more importantly, we can use VM to do replication testing etc.

actually how do we benchmark it?

native CPU can have up to 16 cores in total (2 CPU Nehalem with HT enabled), but Xen & vSphere can only have up to 8 cores right? In what circumstances would CPU usage become the key performance factor?

You could just try to copy things on the SAN, installing an OS, trying to see if it's fast or not...
