OK, I've followed the above mentioned guide and have watched the snapshot status under "tasks" and although the snapshot is defined previously, it appears the snapshot is only active during the backup and replication execution. Therefore it appears that there is no performance penalty for having snapshots defined other than when running snapshot dependent tasks.

Can anyone confirm this is the case?
