Thread: Running DSS on USB Stick

Default Running DSS on USB Stick

Is it OK to boot and run DSS off a USB memory stick rather than running off a hard disk?
Is their going to be any speed issue? ie is it going to slow things down?
Is there going to be any problem writing log files? ie USB sticks have a limited number of writes in their lifetime - I assume logs are written often - is this going to be a problem?

Can anyone provide answers to the above questions?

Well, make sure you get a high-quality USB stick. Do your research to find one that uses SLC (single-level cells) instead of MLC (multi-level cells). A usb stick that uses MLC and hardware-integrated wear leveling would work, too, though.

As far as speed issues, that isn't an issue, except perhaps with booting with USB 1-speed devices.

That being said, I use the trial version of DSS on USB sticks as a demo box for our customers when doing sales presentations.

Whichever option you pick, it makes sense to have an already-flashed USB stick to use for backup purposes. (Then it's fine if it's the dirt cheap kind.)
