i´m trying to figure out the best hw-components for the open-e dss v6 solution. one hardware prerequisite in the manual open-e dss is the internal usb port for the usb dongle. is that really necessary or could i boot just from cd or external usb stick and install the software to the hdds?
We have one SAN that boots off an external USB thumb drive (plugged into the front of the case), and two others that are currently using internal CF card reader connected to our onboard SATA port (detected as a 4GB SATA hard drive).
Both work great, but the CF cards boot faster, and the WebGUI is a bit faster. The CF cards are UDMA, so the performance is better than USB.
