Thread: Data from Share to USB HD

Question Data from Share to USB HD

    Hi Guys,

I am curious to know how the best way of getting data from the NAS share to USB HD is on DSS V5.

Currently the only method we use is plugging the USB HD drive into a PC on the network then using robocopy to copy from NAS share to the USB. This can be quite slow when you have 800 - 1TB of data to copy to the USB device.

Currently i am looking into DeltaCopy a rsync tool for windows because i am aware DSS has a inbuilt rsync agent and thought perhaps using an inbuilt agent will speed up the process because of its data compression over network etc...?

I am eager to find a replication solution at storage level, eg plugging the drive directly into the NAS and copying data from a share to the device cutting out any network delays. I'm aware you can mount the USB drive to the NAS but usually this wipes the drive then leaves it formatted in a unusable format for windows to then mount later.

Any ideas would be very welcome.

    Default

If you use a USB drive in the DSS server it will only be seen as a Dynamic Unit used for backup only. The DeltaCopy will work as with the Rsync for Linux systems as well to the DSS Server. eSATA can work but keep in mind that we will format this with our volume manager that is different then the Windows.
    All the best,

    Todd Maxwell
