Default Virtual Iron and recent Open-e revs

    Good afternoon!

We're still running Virtual Iron 4.5.16.11 as our primary virtualization stack, and will be for the foreseeable future, at least a year.

What's the general experience with the latest builds and running VI from the iSCSI? Checking for traps laying in wait for the unwary.....

    Thanks!

Best of luck to ya. I have been arguing with a number of VI problems. Though I don't really think Open-E is at fault. The biggest gotcha is the IET vs SCST change. If you update your Open-E and you can't see your volumes, that's it. Otherwise I can't think of any other problems offhand. We have been having all kinds of hell with our VI system.

Oracle was no help, Experts Exchange was no help, we just gave up and are now converting to VMWare. BTW, how many servers do you need? If you need 3 or less VMware has a small business bundle that's only like $1000. That's what we're converting to now. Good stuff

Yeah I'm still on VI too. No plans on moving to anything else besides Oracle VM 3.. if it ever make it out of the closet they are hiding it in.

The key with VI is to make sure that damn database is happy. It has to be defragged and cleaned quite frequently. I've never had any problems with it [Virtual Iron] other than database related ones....

As you mentioned the biggest change is IET/SCST. So I suggest you get some spare hardware and run the demo for a few weeks to months and make sure you don't have any problems.

Tyler Jewell, VP products, said the 6.0 version of the tool shows performance issues related to the configuration of a particular component. It can diagnose which of several parts is generating a slowdown and identify a possible remedy. And it can measure the service level being provided by a virtual machine, perform chargeback for its use, and report key information on its operation to the system administrator and the business user owner of the virtual machine.
The performance monitoring provided by vFoglight can be used for capacity planning, showing administrators levels of usage of existing virtual machines, and allowing them to project when additional resources will be needed. It can also help guarantee delivery of service levels called for by end users or customers.

VI has been good, but it is aging. I got a new server that has the Intel xeon 5600 based processors and I can't use a guest with more than 1 vCPU on it. Oracle would not support me on this at all.

How has your conversion to the small business bundle with vmware been? Any gotchas with vmware and/or open-e DSS that I need to be aware of?
