Error 12 : Error in rsync protocol data stream

I get the following error while running a data replication task:

Synchronization to xx.xx.xx.xx failed. Error 12 : Error in rsync protocol data stream

This configuration has been working for several weeks without problems and just suddenly started giving this error.

The replication is via a 10Mb site to site VPN connection which has not change in any way.
To try and correct the problem I have applied the latest update 6.0up14.8401.4221 64bit on both sides and the problem still exists.
