Thread: Recomended WAN speed for Synchronous Volume Replication

Default Recomended WAN speed for Synchronous Volume Replication

What is the recommended WAN speed for Synchronous Volume Replication over a WAN. Is 10 Mbit/s enough or should it be more towards 100 Mbit/s or higher?

No one can give you an answer on that question. I've asked a couple of times, but it's impossible for any one to tell how much bandwith you will need.
Luckily I found a way to determine our own bandwith.

We have 2 units, where unit 1 is the main unit and unit 2 is a backup via replicating.
At this moment, both units are in the same rack and connected on the same storage network.
Because of that, I was able to measure the bandwith usage on that network (we use InterMapper for that) and now I know we need about 15 Mbit/sec with longer peaks of aprox. 40 MBit/sec.

We are planning to move unit 2 to an external location, but then we need to get proper bandwith over there.
