Thread: I want to get my data back

Default I want to get my data back

My USB DOM DSS 16 TB was broken. Now I want to get back my data on the three HDDs. I have installed the 60 days trial version. I can see the three HDD in Volume manager. I have started in 32bit and 64bit version. But what is to do now?

From the xtended tools I take option 10: LVM VG (Volume group) recover settings.

I do not get back my vg and logical volumes.

When booting and running from cd nothing can be saved, as the cd is read only media.
What do you mean 'broken'? DSSV5?
    60 day trial of V6?

Unless you erased, rebuilt, or in some other way, deleted the data, its still there.

    Typically without a DOM:
-Create a cd from the iso for your system.
-attach a usb thumb drive at least 1GB
-boot from the cd, and choose install.
-install software to the usb thumb drive.
    -remove cd, and reboot

your volume and data are there, but the NIC info will need to be re-entered.

The Restore option is for when you have deleted Logical Volumes not the Volume Group.
IF you have not deleted your Volume Group by using the last option then your data is ok.

So can you tell us if you are using the DSS V5 and what build was it that you can remember?

When going into the Volume Group did the Unit "S000X" state Available or other?

Default I think it was version 5 with an usb dongle?

Thank you for the prompt answer!

I remember, I have took the last update for this dongle (DSS 16TB approimately 3 years old)

I have created a CD from ISO (V6 trial). I boot from this CD and install V6 trial on a new Harddisk. Than I startet the server again. The harddrive S001, S002 and S004 are available.

I have destroid one RAID 5 (S003) when I make a volume group with this one.

The network settings are configured by hand.

But what is to do now?

Can you download version V5 from your user portal and try that iso?
When you say 'new hard disk' for the V6 install, was the RAID re-configured prior to you doing the V6 install?

    Default I will try so

I think that was ist. I will take a version 5 iso. The Raid5 was a hardware Raid only with backup data. So never mind.

I will try it tomorrow, so now I am still at home.
Thank you. I will tell you, if that was the solution for me.

I downloaded the DSS v5 4562 zip, extracted it to an USB-stick, made it bootable with the .exe on the stick and booted the server. But the GUI showed me neither in 32bit nor in 64bit my desired Volume Groups. The Units are stated available, except the unit with my newly created volume group.

By default the DSS V5 will boot in 64bit mode and you can see this in the Console screen or the Help about section of the GUI, you can change if need be from the Console by going into the Console Tools then select Boot options then System architecture.

Default But How can I get accdess now

All SXXX are available but how can I get access to the data? If I make a new volume group for example with S000 the data will be lost due to formatting the disk.

I hope you will have an answer.

PS: Start to read with knoppix; the data are not there.

If this state's Available then this looks like the Unit has been deleted and if you enable as a Volume Group you will be formatting the unit, looks like the volumes might have been deleted.
