The hotspare is already there - but there are media errors on some of the drives that are part of the array. We want to use the DSS GUI to force a rebuild onto the hotspare. What's the proper method for that?

Well - I went ahead and just marked the drive offline - rebuild to the hotspare began automatically and progress is being shown in place of the "Hotspare" text.
However, I can't seem to click the checkbox to mark the bad drive for removal and apply it - it keeps getting unchecked.

Does your Array rebuilding now? if it's rebuilding, then you need to wait tell it finished.
Also be sure that you marked the right disk.
