Thread: Hardware RAID - force rebuild to hotspare - proper way

  1. #1

Question Hardware RAID - force rebuild to hotspare - proper way

What's the proper method to force a rebuild to a hotspare drive? We have drives which are reporting media/other errors, and want to RMA them.

In the GUI (we are using Intel/LSI controllers), we see the online drives and the hotspare listed. We also see dropdowns next to the Online drives to set them Offline, as well as a checkbox to "prepare for removal."

So, what's the proper sequence which will force a rebuild onto the hotspare (global hotspare)?

Set the drive Offline, then Apply, then mark for removal, then Apply? Or can both be done at the same time? And will this force a rebuild?

In general for Hot spare disks(drives) it is recommended to check your hardware manual, or contact the RAID Controller support team to find out there way of creating the Hot spare.

As you can use the hot spare drives to replace the damaged ( failed) drives in your RAID Array storage.

As when the drive get failed in your RAID Array, the RAID controller will start to look into all the disks (drives) that this controller controlling for a hot spare drive, and if there is an available disk(drive), then the RAID controller will replace the role of the damaged disk in the RAID Array with the hot spare disk.
And the data and parity bit are rebuilt from the other disks automatically ( This process is controlled by the RAID Controller ), and the RAID array is changed back to optimized state when the rebuild is complete.

The hot spare drives are useful only if the capacity of the drive is equal or greater than the capacity drive in an array that become degraded (damaged).

And in general, choose the more safer way to deal with disks.

The hotspare is already there - but there are media errors on some of the drives that are part of the array. We want to use the DSS GUI to force a rebuild onto the hotspare. What's the proper method for that?

Well - I went ahead and just marked the drive offline - rebuild to the hotspare began automatically and progress is being shown in place of the "Hotspare" text.

However, I can't seem to click the checkbox to mark the bad drive for removal and apply it - it keeps getting unchecked.

Does your Array rebuilding now? if it's rebuilding, then you need to wait tell it finished.
Also be sure that you marked the right disk.
