I have a question/proposition on the mentioned issue - Logical Volume naming and target identification.
I find it very annoying not to have the possibility to name individual logical volumes - instead, you can name just the Volume Groups which are used/seen a lot less...
If you have few logical volumes it's a real pain to identify them during target creation/lun configuration... all you see is just the LV nave which tells you nothing - lvgroupA01, lvGroupB13 - no size, no hints, nothing!
and, giving the blazing fast web UI jumping back and forth to confirm/check you're using the correct logical volume its a real pain.
How are you folks dealing with this? if you have, lets say 15 LVs? How do you know which is which? (other than using a "scratch pad" to make notes?)
On the other side (from the perspective of the servers/computers) the only thing they can "see" is the "Product ID/SCSI ID" of the assigned disks... and the only targets where you can actually see/change/set the SCSI ID are the iSCSI targets that at least have their name visible in the portal...
If you have to use a few FC targets it's get a real pain to identify the disks... from the initiator perspective you see just the SCSI ID (and lun num)... on the target side, when you finally use the right LV to create the FC target, you can see just the luns...
In case a bad wwn mapping is done or if you use the default FC target group possibly with a few luns, there is no way to confirm the right volumes are seen by the initiators. You have to start the machine up, and guessing the size and lun of the volume try to match that with the FC targets...
Wouldn't it be possible to set or at least see the SCSI ID of the FC targets in the web ui???
Also... why it is not possible to see the current/actual FC initiator connections and group membership in the web UI? SCST shure allows that! And it can show "active" FC connections also...
I'm a little pissed about this because lately I had a few problems with the FC target being reset on the DSS box and "switching" back to initiator mode (after some initiators did a target reset)... after changing to first to initiator mode and then back to target mode in the gui some luns reappeared on the initiator side but scst has got confused somehow and it "showed" the wrong logical volumes - from other group(s)!
You should be able to name you lv whatever name you want, and a notes/comments section would be extremely helpful so I don't have to keep a notebook of translations handy everytime I want to checkout and change logical volumes.
