Thread: Migration from iSCSI to FC

  1. #1

Default Migration from iSCSI to FC

We are planning to replace our old iSCSI based open-E DSS V6 hosts with new FC based DSS V6 hosts.

I was hoping we could just use the LVM-Replication to replicate the current iSCSI-LVs to our new FC-LVs. But apparently that's not possible. So what's our best option here? Is it possible to convert iSCSI-LVs to FC-LVs?

Restoring the data from the backup could cause a significant downtime which should be avoided if possible.

    Any ideas?

    Regards,

    Joern

What kind of data is on the volumes? If it's VMs, then you can use your hypervisor to snapshot, export then import into the new datastore.
If you are running DSS in HA, you could always try booting up the old disks and RAID controller in the new HW. Since you are running v6 on both, the LVM format should be the same.
Open-E will need to weigh in on that one because you may not be able to take an iSCSI volume and convert it to a FC volume without them doing some behind the scenes magic.
You may just need to go the long route and do a traditional data migration. Since you have new hardware, you can always have the new and the old running in parallel while you migrate data from one system to the other with very little downtime.
Since you just bought two new systems, open up a ticket with support. They'd be happy to weigh in.

We do not have a built in mechanism to convert to FC volume.
The best option is like enealDC suggests, and use live migration.
