So is there anything proprietary that has been done with the way that DRBD works?

Yes we have this setup to reserve .12 GB space for replication and Initialization for iSCSI volumes so this would seem in many ways proprietary. I know you have good reason for your question we just did not focus our engineering efforts to support outside of what we have built.
