Thread: DDS V5 replication impossable.

    Default DDS V5 replication impossable.

    Hi,

We've just started to experiment with 2 HP Proliant DL320S with 5x750Gb HD each and an OPEN-E DDS storage server. After some compatibility problems between the proliant and the DDS, it finaly runs quit well now. With the internal P800 disk controller I created 1 big RAID-5 disk of almost 3Tb on each machine.

    Problem:
On both machines I created 2 equel sized LV's (NAS) with the replication option. I enabled the "Data Replication Agent", I configured the "Data Replication Agent Settings", I chose the desired "Volume Replication Mode" settings so there is a destination for every source and I configured the correct "Mirror server IP". Whatever I try in the "Create New Volume Replication Task", after scanning.... no LV becomes available for replication. What is going wrong?

Not sure if you are combining the both functions as Data Replication and Volume Replication are different. Below is a short how to for both.

    Data Replication:

    1. Configure shares on both servers.
    2. Enable "Synchronize Agent" in Configuration->NAS settings->Synchronize Agent on the destination server.
    3. Go to Configuration->NAS resources, select a share and enable "Synchronize Agent" on share. If you want be more secure enter user, password and IP from source server.
    4. On the Source Server create a Snapshot and assign this to the Logical Volume that will be used for the Data Replication then go to Maintenance->Backup->Data Replication function.
    5. Enter IP addres of destination server (also user and password if you have used it) and push refresh button to get shares list from source server.
    6. Select your source and destination server. Enter task name and apply to create new replication task.
    7. Push play button on task or configure time schedule.

    Volume Replication:

Create iSCSI LV (please create volumes of equal sizes), enable the Replication check mark.

Then go to the Volume Replication on the left screen from the Volume Manager Set for Source. If source set IP of Destination Server then select the Logical Volume.

Click on the task from the left side and then click the green play button.

Then enable the Target in the Target Manager (select WB).

On Destination server set the same iSCSI Logical Volume size as the Source and set for Replication. Then go to the Volume Replication on the left screen from the Volume Manager and Set for Destination. Enter IP of Source Server then select the Logical Volume.

To view the synchronization processes go to Status > Tasks > Volume Replication and there you will see if it is consistent).
    All the best,

The implication of Todd's post is that you can't do Volume Replication on a NAS volume. Volume replication is only for block level volumes (iscsi). You are going to need to use Data Replication using the first procedure he outlined.
