Thread: NTP Server and Snapshot

    Post NTP Server and Snapshot

    Hi,

    I have three further questions:

    1. When I select the NTP server to synchronize the time on the NAS-XSR SMB managed server, then it is not shown how often this is done. Only once in the moment when I select the server and apply the settings? Or is it a scheduled procedure like every 12 hours or every 24 hours? This question came up last weekend, where we had the time change in europe.

    2. Snapshots. I don't understand the sense of the snapshots here, bacause this is - like it seems to me - a fully manual process. I first have to login to NAS-XSR SMB, the go to Snapshots and klick on "Create". Then a snapshot is going to be created. A Snapshot is only reasonable when the snapshot functionality is an automatic process, where the snapshots are created once a day, once a week or once a month. In that way it doesn't make any sense to me!

    3. Antivirus. I set up that the antivirus database to "update now, and every 12 hours". This setting was made on the 19.10.2006. Today, 04.11.2006, the database is still from 19.10.2006! When I manually klick again on the setting "update now, and every 12 hours" then the database is being updated to 04.11.2006.
    What's wrong with tha automatic update function?

    Please review the answers below to your questions. If for some reason you still are not able to update on the Antivirus please send logs to support@open-e.com.

    Question 1:

    When using NTP server to maintain proper time & date, please
    make sure you have proper Gateway and DNS settings for this to update automatically every 12hours.

    Question 2:

    Accessing the snapshot to restore, is done manually by selecting the files or directories from the Snapshot directory. Recommended reserved space for Snapshot is at least 10% of the total storage capacity of the data in use for current and future. The storage of all changes is independent of the file-system Open-E NAS-XSR uses on block-level.
    Only when the snapshot is deleted / removed the changes are permanently transferred to the actual data volume. Through a separate share, which is only available for the administrator (or backup administrator), a complete backup of the dataset can be done. The Snapshot function is perfectly transparent for the users in the network. Only the administrator can work with the Snapshots.

    Question 3:

    Make sure your DNS settings are correct and updated to the latest NAS-XSR SMB version. "Select mirror" and choose one of the mirror servers nearest to your localization.

    Option "Update interval" allows updating the virus database:
    •Now
    •Now and every hour
    •Now and every 12 hours at 0:00,12:00
    •Now and every 24 hours at 0:00
    All the best,

    Todd Maxwell

    @1:
    The Gateway and DNS entries must be correct, otherwise the manual time update or the antivirus update wouldn't work. Also a test email can be send out.
    The time should be updated every 12 hours? I will keep track of it.

    @2:
    OK, thank you.

    @3:
    DNS and gateway are correct. It's the IP of the router connected to internet via DSL/calbe. Two days after the manual update of antivirus database and the option 'Now and every 24 hours at 0:00' the database was not updated. The content of 'freshclam.log':

    It still seems not to work automatically...

    We wanted to let you know our engineers investigated this and you are correct for reporting this. They will fix this on the next release. In the mean time could you do manual update until then. Please be patient for this new release as we will investigate the time table for this.

    Many thanks!
    All the best,

    Todd Maxwell
