Is this going to be permanent, or in future will this feature be available again. It was really convenient for backup purposes. If not, what are our other options apart from replication & quick and dirty copy?

We recommend using a third party application like Acronis(or similar) to do backups.
This offers more flexibility in the backup jobs.
We also have the RALUS agent for syamntec backup.
